Atlantic City Blackjack Review

Atlantic City Blackjack

Atlantic City Blackjack is another popular variation of traditional Blackjack offered at exclusively Microgaming-powered online casinos, but you may also find it at many of the best online casinos that source their games from a variety of providers and include Microgaming in that inventory.

Like all of Microgaming’s online Blackjack tables, the presentation is very classy with the look and feel of an authentic table in a real-world club. Atlantic Blackjack is played with eight standard decks in its virtual shoe and, as is common with all online Blackjack games, those decks are shuffled ahead of each and every game.

A single hand can be played per game, and table limits allow bets of between £1 and £200 per hand to give plenty of flexibility for the majority of players. Blackjack pays 3 to 2 and the Dealer Rule is set as ‘stand on all 17’ as is common to the majority of what we would consider ‘traditional’ Blackjack games.

So what are the additional rules that give Atlantic City Blackjack its unique style? Well, here’s the skinny:

Peek Rule – The Dealer in Atlantic City Blackjack will peek his face-down hole card whenever his upcard is showing a picture card, 10 or Ace. If he finds the hand is a Blackjack he will reveal that and end the game. This offers an advantage in that it prevents you from splitting and / or doubling down on your hand only to find that the Dealer beats both hands with a Blackjack, losing you twice your original stake.

Splitting is allowed on any any initial hand with matching card values, and requires the same original stake to be placed on each split hand. A pair of Aces can only be split once with one dealt card going to each hand before it stands, however other eligible hands can be split a maximum of three times per game.

Doubling down is allowed on your first two cards, and also after a split. One further card will be dealt to the hand after which it must automatically stand.

Insurance is also available on your original hand of two cards. This side bet is offered whenever the Dealer’s upcard is an Ace, and requires a stake of half your original bet which will pay out at 2 to 1 should the Dealer’s peek reveal a Blackjack.

Late Surrender is allowed with Atlantic City Blackjack, meaning you may tactically fold a weak initial hand losing half your bet rather than risk a more likely scenario of losing the full amount. Where the Dealer must peek their hand, surrender is only possible if that does not reveal a Blackjack.

In combination the rules of Atlantic City Blackjack deliver a rather nice house edge of 0.35% (RTP 99.65%) assuming optimal play.

Verdict

The peek and extra freedoms of the splitting and doubling rules in Atlantic City Blackjack add a nice extension of the rules of classic Blackjack, together with some new strategic considerations to stretch your skills at the table.

Microgaming has also done its usual excellent job of wrapping it all up in a very enjoyable package, so if you’re looking for an interesting new challenge beyond the more traditional online Blackjack games we can highly recommend having a ‘City’ break.
