IGT Review

IGT are a classic software provider that has been in the gambling business since the 1980s. At first, they only operated in the land-based sector, but thanks to a series of successful mergers the company became a full-scale casino product provider that supplies both online and brick-and-mortar casinos.

IGT, or International Game Technology if you are acronym-curious, is a true behemoth when it comes to the whole sphere of casino slots. Its rise to slot supremacy began in 1981, after it became a publicly listed company following the success of an earlier video poker product it developed.

Thereafter it started to increase its influence on gaming floors throughout the US as it began developing slots games, including the original Cleopatra Slot and Wheel of Fortune progressive jackpot slot – games that will be very familiar to any online slot player too, since they both made successful transitions to the Internet in the 2000s.

IGT also caused a sensation amongst slot players in the 80s when it introduced the world’s first wide-area progressive slot system, which could also boast a starting point jackpot of one million dollars. That’s a whole chunk of change nowadays, but imagine the impact of that minimum jackpot figure three decades ago!

Their online expansion began around 2005 when they acquired WagerWorks to successfully port their land-based hits to the online world. Thus, most of their offer is made up from slot games, but they’ve also had a series of successful card and table games as well. They even have their hands busy in the social casino world, thanks to yet another successful purchase of Double Down Interactive.

IGT Slots

IGT have remained a massive player in the provision of slots to land-based casinos, with it being estimated that it manufactures nearly half the slot machines in the US alone, however it’s also a force to be reckoned with for online slots too.

It was a relatively late starter in the online casino field, but with a strategic acquisition of Wagerworks in 2005 (for a trifling $90 million) it absorbed a serious supplier of online slots to some of the best online casinos, such as William Hill, Paddy Power and Betfair, and instant access to a huge community of active online slots players.

IGT Interactive became the new brand of this online and mobile gaming focused division, and IGT quickly brought its existing portfolio of hit land-based slots to the eager hands of online slot players. The catalogue of IGT’s online slots is simply staggering with classics like its Da Vinci Diamonds and Elvis slots shoulder to shoulder with newer releases like Siberian Storm and Pixies of the Forest.

In 2015 IGT itself was acquired by Italian gaming company GTECH, but interestingly it was GTECH who decided to drop its name in favour of retaining the IGT brand – perhaps some indication of the power the IGT name holds in the offline and online casino world.

IGT Blackjack Games

IGT has a well-rounded Blackjack portfolio that offers both standard variants as well as more lucrative options with side bets. Among their offer, you can find the following games:

IGT Table Blackjack – A standard variant designed by WagerWorks, Table Blackjack is a 6-deck game with 3:2 payouts. Per the rules, you can double down on any two cards you want and double after splitting (except aces). The dealer stands on all 17s and you can only split one time, so there’s no re-splitting aces or any other card. Dealer peeks on 10 cards and you can get a 2:1 insurance if you want.

IGT Multi-Hand Blackjack with Bonus Bet – A multi-hand game where you can play up to 3 hands at a time. Payouts are 3:2 for Blackjack and 2:1 for insurance and the dealer stands on all 17s. Doubling down is allowed on any two cards and there’s no re-splitting. The bonus bet is a side bet on whether a hand will be a Blackjack or not, with the trick being that only the first two cards are considered as Blackjack and not split cards. The bonus bet payouts range from 5x-1000x.

IGT Blackjack 21+3 – A European variant with the popular 21+3 side bet. This is a 6 deck game where the dealer stands on all 17, there’s only one re-split and doubling down is allowed on any two cards and after a split. The 21+3 side bet is betting on your cards and the dealer’s up card forming any of the five selected poker hands, with payouts up to 100x.

IGT European Blackjack – Similar to 21+3, this is a 6-deck game but with better rules that give it a very low house edge of approximately 99.7%. Double on any two cards or after split, split aces and play them like any hand, and the dealer stands on all 17s.

IGT Power Blackjack – A favorite to many, at Power Blackjack you have the Power Double, which gives you an option to replace your double down card on hands 9-11, and the Power Split, which gives you a chance to split when you are first dealt a hard 15 or 16 . However, dealer’s 22 is a push.

IGT Blackjack with Hot Streak Bonus – A European game with a hot streak twist added to it. The name comes from the side bet bonuses, which will have your win a bonus for having two, three or four winning hands in a row. The max bonus is 10x.

Verdict

We’ve little doubt that the new company will continue to sit at the top table of online casino software suppliers, and whilst its existing range of online slots are unlikely to fall from favour with online players (Cleopatra still remains one of the most popular online slots today, and should be flattered by the countless Egyptian-themed ‘imitators’ put out by rival online slot developers) we look forward to what this famous name will produce in the coming years.
