Playtech Live Casino Holdem Review
The phenomenal rise in interest in tournament poker in recent years has brought with it a slew of new casino poker formats pitting the player against the dealer rather than other players. Amongst these is Casino Hold ‘Em, inspired by the famous Texas Hold ’Em tournament poker, and if the feel of a real deal is attractive to you then Playtech’s Live Casino version under review here could well be worth holding out for.
Like Texas Hold ‘Em the core gambit of Casino Hold ’Em is to build a poker hand that will outrank the dealer with two hole cards (personal to the player) in combination with five community cards available to both the player and, in this case, the dealer.
The dealer must hold a minimum hand of a pair of 4s to qualify, but thereafter it’s straight hand-to-hand combat to win the game. It’s a quick game to learn, with a little bit of strategy around the Call bet decision that make’s it an interesting alternative to the traditional lure of Blackjack gaming.
Playtech’s Live Casino Hold ‘Em utilises the company’s state-of-the-art studios and software to create a very realistic and intuitive way to enjoy this game on the majority of modern desktop PCs and mobile devices. At the time of review Playtech is easily competing to be regarded as one of the very best Live Casino developers out there, having invested heavily in facilities and technology to make the experience of playing satisfyingly close to playing in a real-world club.
If we were to be really nit-picking about the Live recreation of this game it would simply be the physical layout printed on the table. It’s so authentic that it’s pretty much impossible to read the pay tables and other rules printed on it! Of course there’s the inbuilt menus to check for those details if you need them, but perhaps a layout adapted to be easily readable via the camera view of the table would be a nice tweak to make things a little more user friendly?
Other than our tiny criticism voiced above (which is most unlikely to ruin the experience for any player), Playtech has ably demonstrated why its Live Casino games are much in demand with big name casino operators. This is a pacy, elegantly executed version of the game that is enhanced by the sense of playing a real table with real cards and a human dealer marshalling the action. Poker players should love this format, but so too (in our humble opinion) will any player that relishes the challenge of mixing a little strategy into their casino entertainment and is looking for something beyond Blackjack’s ample charms.
